Athlete of the Month - January 2018

 Congratulations to Marie Karnes for earning Athlete of the Month.


One thing that is great about CrossFit is that after completing the WOD athletes feel empowered by a sense of accomplishment, Marie gets physically stronger and more confident every day.  Marie has improved so much during her time at Williamston CrossFit, recently stringing together a few double unders.  Marie's positive demeanor, focus on being her best, and support for her fellow athletes made this an easy choice!


Congratulations Marie for your hard work and commitment.  You have earned this recognition.


A few words from Marie:


When did you become a member at WC? August 2017


What do you do when you're not at WC? I am spending time with my husband and chasing after our 4 kiddos. I also am finishing up my Special Education Teaching Internship through MSU at Chippewa Middle School in Okemos, and homework. Lots and lots of homework. 


When did you realize crossfit is right for you? After on-ramp and the following week. I have had chronic joint pain and limited mobility in my hips and lower back that started when I was a teenager due to an inflammatory arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis. Since the week of on-ramp, I have had zero joint pain so needless to say, I was HOOKED! 


What's your favorite WOD/movement? It’s all my favorite!


What's your least favorite WOD/movement? I struggle with sit-ups without an ab mat and dead bugs. (That lack of lower back mobility makes it hard!) 


What is one thing you have done at WC that you never thought u would do? Enjoy working out. 


What motivates you during a WOD? Everyone who is there. Everybody is amazing, encouraging and a joy to work out with. That makes it so easy to come to the gym routinely. And the music.


What is something about yourself we may not know? I have 2 tattoos. One is a pink ribbon in honor of my mom who is a breast cancer survivor, and one is of my two boys’ initials… I’ll be adding my little girls’ initials SOON!


What advice would you give someone just getting started with crossfit? YOU DO YOU!! The beauty of CrossFit is it is all scaleable to what you physically can do, and what you’re comfortable with. It can be intimidating with so many talented athletes at the gym, but you keep doing you and eventually you’ll start surprising yourself.
