Athlete of the Month - July 2017

Congratulations to Katie Donahue for earning recognition for a job well done.

 

Since jumping on board Katie has been a pleasure to coach.  Her work ethic is admirable and her focus on the technical aspects of the movements has helped her improve so much.  She has focused hard during our current strength progression to improve her form and it is paying off for her.

 

Katie's positive demeanor, commitment to her health, and support for her fellow athletes are all attributes of a successful person and an inspiration to others at the gym.

A few words from Katie:

 

When did you become a member at WC?

October 2016

 

What do you do when you're not at WC?

I am an osteopathic manipulative medicine physician working at Michigan State University. I work with patients to maximize functionality and mobility of their musculoskeletal system with a non-invasive, hands-on, holistic approach. When not working out at WC, I enjoy running with either my favorite running parter, Kyla or my boyfriend and adopted dog. 

 

When did you realize crossfit is right for you?

I grew up as a competitive swimmer. Working out side by side with other teammates has been ingrained in me. When college swimming ended, I dabbled in triathlons and running, but was still missing the coach and team environment. I dropped into my very first crossfit class while living in Mexico (and not speaking Spanish). I didn’t understand a word what was said but the familiar feeling of challenge, competition, and measurable achievement at the end of the workout was there and didn’t need to be translated. I love showing up, having a planned work out and sweating through it with others while competing against myself to see how hard I can push. I enjoy being able to challenge myself to learn new skills, to add the extra weight, and to perfect the details on technique. 

 

What's your favorite WOD/movement? 

I love the endurance WODs (the longer the better) and anything with a run or Kettle bell. 

 

What's your least favorite WOD/movement?

Sumo deadlift high pulls. Just not ready to embrace “trap city”. 

 

What is one thing you have done at WC that you never thought u would do?

Getting the feel for kipping pull ups and double-unders. 

 

What motivates you during a WOD?

The environment- the coaches, athletes, music and the clock. 

 

What is something about yourself we may not know?

When I grow up, I want to own and operate a wellness Bed & Breakfast centered around community, fitness, and sustainable foods. 

 

What advice would you give someone just getting started with crossfit?

Crossfit is an all encompassing community that everyone can succeed in no matter age, shape or size. Set your own goals, measure your improvements, celebrate your achievements. There is a way to modify everything and therefore always a way to work at your own level. Take advantage of pushing yourself to be better today than you were yesterday in a supportive environment filled with coaches and athletes who also love seeking new limits. Good things take time- stick with it!
